What’s the Difference Between Conscious Sedation and General Anaesthesia?

When a patient is under general anaesthesia, they are no longer conscious, and therefore, cannot respond when asked questions or to follow commands. • Oral Sedation – Oral sedation is administered in the form of a pill. Generally, the patient will take a pill when going to sleep the night before their procedure, and another an hour before their appointment. This type of sedation is great for reducing dental anxiety, as it creates a relaxing drowsy sensation.
• Inhalation Sedation – A mask is worn by the patient, through which nitrous oxide (or laughing gas) is gradually administered as the patient breathes as normal. This sedation method is fast-acting, helping to relieve all pain and anxiety without long-lasting side effects once the procedure has finished.
• IV Sedation – This form of sedation is administered directly to the bloodstream, meaning that it is fast-acting and results complete relaxation. While patients feel very at ease and calm, IV sedation will often result in partial to full memory loss (amnesia) of the treatment, so there will be very little memory of the procedure.
